Wisdom Good Men Declare as best by far.
E’en as the moon eclipses every star; plain,
All duly fall in the wise men’s train. (Buddhist proverb)
Buddhism, generally speaking, is a religion of knowledge or wisdom, for its goal is enlightenment. World hostilities and unrest are caused by human ignorance, from which arise craving and the three demeritorious elements, namely; greed, hatred and delusion. The lord Buddha taught us to anniholats all sufferings by trying to do away with ignorance and craving, for as soon as ignorance and craving are destroyed, all demeritorious elements will have no ground on which to stand and will consequently fall and be destroyed as well.
The people of the world today, the majority of them, at any rate, nay feel proud of their rights, of their freedom of speech, of their freedom of writing, of their freedom of thought and do forth, but few of them realize that they are still enslaved by their own evil passions, the passions which trouble and afflict them bodily as well as mentally. Are they really and truly free from being the slaves of money and other temptations? The world war is nothing but the consequence of human ignorance, which grows into different kinds of evil passions such as craving and hatred and finally brings grievances and serious losses to the world.
The lord Buddha has pointed out that to release human beings from suffering it is requisite to make them awake to the truth that, physically they may be free, but so long as they are bound by attachment, pride, vengeance and other hankerings, they are mentally slaves and may be forced by their own evil passions to do any sort of crimes or even to commit suicide as the case may by.
How can they set themselves free from their inner bondage is the riddle to be solved by those who love freedom and peace, and especially by those who are responsible for the world’s security.
